My main motivation for sharing this project is not the outcome itself, but rather the desire to share what the journey has given me from my own perspective. First of all, I’d like to mention that my primary motivation for entering this competition was my wish to represent Türkiye in the Woolmark Performance Challenge. Since Türkiye has not yet had a finalist in this challenge, I aimed to make a strong breakthrough as a potential finalist. Unfortunately, I did not make it into the top 12, and therefore was not selected as a finalist; however, I gained invaluable experience for my professional development throughout this process.
My category, the Fire Challenge, expanded my perspective on the measures that can be taken to enhance fire resistance in textile development. Through this competition, I gained deep insight into fabric technologies—especially how we can support athletes in motorsports such as F1 and MotoGP. Beyond that, the Woolmark Learning Centre allowed me to reach far beyond the general knowledge my peers had about wool. The information I learned there provided a solid reference point during the project development phase. Discovering the nature-respecting properties of Merino wool and exploring how I could further refine it or combine it with other elements was particularly valuable in my product development process.
In developing my fire-resistant garment created from a 50% Merino Wool and 50% Meta-Aramid composite with various chemical treatments, which I named MerinoShield. I went through an incredible journey that elevated me professionally. Even though I was not selected as a finalist with a project I truly believed in, after countless sleepless nights and extensive research and development, I can confidently say that I have levelled up within my field. I am deeply grateful to Woolmark and Alpinestars for supporting the development journey of students like myself. I’m already looking forward to future projects and challenges.
